WADESBORO - On Tuesday, August 8, 2023, Mr. Alvin Odell "Don" Deatherage, Jr., 80, passed away peacefully at the McWhorter House at Hospice of Union County in Monroe.
There will be a memorial service at 4:00 PM Monday, August 14, 2023 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with military honors.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
A private burial will be in the Horne Family Cemetery in Peachland at a later date.
Don was born May 29, 1943 in Laredo, TX and was a son of the late Alvin Odell Deatherage, Sr. and that late Shirley Hancoff Deatherage. He was a high school graduate and also earned an associates degree. He worked for 40 years in food service, having worked with the opening and managing of new restaurants, mainly Kentucky Fried Chicken.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 43 years, Brenda Horne Deatherage; his son, Chris Deatherage of Wadesboro; his grandson, Ricky the dog, who always loved sitting in his lap and riding in the car with him; his brother and sister, Michael Deatherage (Debbie) and Tammy Deatherage both of Florida; his extended Horne family, Diane Shackleford and Patsy Honeycutt both of Peachland, Kendra Freeman of Wadesboro and Robbie Mitchell of Monroe.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Brad Deatherage and his brothers, Ronnie and Donnie Deatherage.
Don was an avid golfer prior to declining health and was an excellent bowler. He enjoyed fishing, watching sports, and time spent with is family . Although he tried to act tough, he was a gentle giant with a big heart.
His family is most grateful to Hospice of Union County for the service and care they provided for him and also to Neighborhood Nurses, especially, Jewell, with whom he shared a very special bond during the time she was with them.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Horne Family Cemetery, c/o, Eldis Caudle, or to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.
