WADESBORO - Mrs. Barbara Pope Briles, 69, died peacefully Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Carolinas Healthcare System Anson with her beloved daughter, Deana, at her bedside.
Barbara was born July 5, 1945, in Anson County, NC as the third child of Ida Watkins Pope and Ross Pope. She attended Ansonville School and graduated from Anson High School. Following graduation, she married Dennis Pope and to that union was born her only child, Deana Pope Lawhon Ladd.
For thirty years she worked at the Hampton B. Allen Library. It was during these years that she met and learned to love the citizens of Anson county. She became an avid reader as well. Following her retirement, she lived briefly in Georgia and cared for her granddaughter, Ruby Lu. When she returned home, she worked part time at Daymark and until shortly before her death; she worked as the office manager for the Anson County Historical Society.
Barbara loved gardening and working outside. On many days you could find her weeding, planting and watering in the gardens at the library, church or in a friend's yard. She also had a great love for animals and had planned to volunteer for the local animal shelter.
She was a communicant at Calvary Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the vestry. She was a member of the Wadesboro Garden Club, the Book Club and enjoyed participating in the Yahoo Yoga Group.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Larry (Sonny) Pope and Edward Cline Pope. Surviving is her daughter, Deana (Joe) Ladd; granddaughter, Ruby Lu Lawhon; sisters, Betty Horan and Carolyn Scheid; her sister-in-law, Teresa Pope; her nieces and nephews, Leslie (Trey) Clark, Lorrie D'Amico, Mark (Leigh) Horan and Adam (Ginger) Pope and their families. She also leaves behind her much loved pet, Millie.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00am Friday, May 15, 2015 at Calvary Epsicopal Church with Rev. Michael Bye officiating. There will be a reception for all attending in the parish hall following the service. Private inurnment will be in the columbarium at Calvary Church.
The family will greet friends Thursday, May 14, 2015 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at the home of her sister, Betty Horan with whom Barbara made her home on Wanoka Circle in Wadesboro.
