Wadesboro – Mr. Benjamin Clifton “Benjy” Brasington, age 82, left us for his heavenly home on Thursday, August 26, 2021, while a patient at Novant Health in Matthews.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 3:00PM Sunday, August 29th, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Stacey Lundy officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00PM Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home.
Born in Anson County on June 8, 1939, Benjy was a son of the late Benjamin Clifton Brasington, Sr. and Jennie Brower Brasington. He graduated Wadesboro High School in 1957 and Wingate Junior College two years later. While in high school and at Wingate, Benjy was a member of the track team and enjoyed telling stories about his early athletic prowess.
In 1959, Benjy, along with his father, opened Brasington’s Inc., a successful business endeavor that found Benjy still serving his faithful customer base up until the time of his death.
Benjy was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church having served in many offices and positions. His favorite church activity was attending the Men’s Wesley Bible Sunday School Class, where members call out the numbers of their favorite hymns before singing lustily…sometimes on key, sometimes not.
Benjy was also active with local civic groups. In his younger years, he was a member of the Jaycees and for the last 30+ years was an active member of the Rotary Club, where he was honored both for his outstanding service to Rotary and as a Paul Harris Fellow. For many years, when Anson County operated its own hospital, Benjy was honored to serve as a Trustee on the Hospital Board.
Benjy enjoyed life and had many hobbies, including flying his own airplane, a Piper Comanche. He was an avid hunter and skeet shooter, and his trusty shotgun was never far away. He was an accomplished amateur photographer and has a photograph collection to prove it. Benjy also enjoyed swimming, boating, horses, and singing – especially Elvis songs!
However, the greatest joy in Benjy’s life came from his loving family. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of 60 years, Evelyn “Patsy” Poplin Brasington of the home; a son, Benjy Brasington, III (Carla Burris and her daughter, Camden) of Oak Ridge; two grandchildren, Natalie White (Thomas Gavlik) and Hunter Brasington; and one great-grandchild, Peyton-Rae Gavlik.
Also surviving is his sister, Sharlia Reagan; one brother-in-law, Ebbie Poplin; four sisters-in-law, Betty Martin, Judy Carpenter (Sonny), Kayda Tyson and Sarah Harrington (Steve); and his faithful four-legged companion, Gidget. In addition to his parents, Benjy was preceded in death by a son, Robert Henry Brasington; a sister, Janet Coffman; and the best dog a man could ever have, Jack.
The family suggests memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 118 E. Morgan Street, Wadesboro, NC 28170 or to a charity of your choice.
