CALABASH – On Saturday, December 9, 2023, Mr. Benjamin Michael “Mikey” Tyson, 73, passed away peacefully at his home.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Wednesday, December 13, 2023, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Marsh officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park with military honors.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
Mikey was born September 21, 1950, in Anson County, NC and was a son of Benjamin Leak Tyson and Betty Lou Horne Tyson. He was a 1968 graduate of Bowman High School. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, having served during the Vietnam War.
He worked for a number of years with Dick Brooks Honda in Albemarle and later owned and operated Tyson’s Used Cars in Norwood.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jessica Gales Tyson; his children, Eric Raymond Tyson (Jean) of Mint Hill, Ashley Louise Tyson (Kenneth) of Albemarle, Ashley Nicole Ellington (Brandon) of Wilmington and Lauren Alyssa Mankin of Calabash; his grandchildren, Trace, Vincent, Tate, Sebastian, and Cheyenne; his parents, Ben and Betty Tyson of Wadesboro; his sisters, Teresa Ray (Rodney) of Wadesboro and Melanie Phillips (Billy Ray) of Burnsville and his nieces and nephews and their families.
Mikey enjoyed fishing and collecting coins. He also enjoyed time spent at Lake Tillery and at the beach. He found much happiness just being on the water.
He will be remembered for being a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle and friend. A very charming, kind and generous man, he was also proud to have served in the United States Marines.
He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Shane Tyson, his brother, Derwin Tyson; his paternal grandparents, Caudle and Irene Tyson and his maternal grandparents, Hamp and Anna Dabbs with whom he shared a special relationship.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or to the local veteran’s organization of the donor’s choice.
