Carrie Grooms Bit: Mrs. Hinson

Mrs. Carrie Grooms 'Bit' Hinson, age 97, of Lilesville, NC, entered into eternal rest on Friday, November 28, 2014. Mrs. Hinson, daughter of the late Ebbie Wells and Carrie Grooms, was born on February 10, 1917, in Morven, NC. At age 21, she married Terry Hinson of Lilesville, who preceded her in death, after 65 years of marriage. They had two children, Nancy Hinson Adcock of Laurinburg, NC and Jerry Wells Hinson (Patricia) of Lilesville, NC. Mrs. Hinson was known by many names: 'Grandma' by her six grandchildren: Jane, Jeff, Mike, Terry, Mary Lynn and David; her nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren called her 'Nonnie' and she was Aunt Bit to her many nieces and nephews, whom she loved just like her children and they, in turn, loved her and spent many happy hours in her home. 'Ms. Bit,' as she was called by her many friends, young and old, also received much attention from her and they loved her like family. Bit was never one to sit still for very long. Besides being a faithful wife and mother, she was employed with Belk Department Store in Wadesboro as a buyer until she retired after 28 years of faithful service and where she made many lasting friendships throughout Anson County. While employed at Belk, shoppers would come to the store and ask to be waited on by her. She knew fashion then and that attribute stayed with her all throughout her lifetime until her death. Bit loved to do handiwork, including sewing, knitting, quilting, crocheting, and most any type of work with needles and yarn. Every new baby born in the family and/or community has in its possession a blanket crocheted by her hands, each stitch made with love and compassion. Ms. Bit loved cooking and was famous for her Italian crme cake and of course, her chicken salad. Anyone who walked in her kitchen found a cookie jar full of her famous crispy oat or peanut butter cookies. When there was a sick neighbor or church member or she just 'felt the need,' she was at someone's door with something baked from her kitchen. Until her health began to decline, she was an avid walker, and walked many miles around her neighborhood everyday. She was a community volunteer and enjoyed traveling both around the United States and abroad. Most importantly, Ms. Bit was a dedicated Christian and a faithful member of Gum Springs Baptist Church in Lilesville. She served as a Sunday school teacher for every age group. She was a faithful choir member and served on many committees, but her greatest dedication was to the WMU. She served as President for many years and during that time was an inspiration in expressing the importance of WMU to the younger generation so they could carry on when the time came for her to pass along this important spiritual work. Ms. Bit spent the last years of her life as a resident of the Edwin Morgan Center in Laurinburg, NC. She became friends right away with the nurses and staff and still continued to look well-dressed each day to greet those who came to visit. May she rest in peace now and know that 'All is well with her soul.' Funeral services will be 11:00AM Monday, December 1, 2014 in the Gum Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Hill officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends on Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00PM at Leavitt Funeral Home.
