ALBEMARLE – On Friday, June 17, 2022, Mr. Charles Wayne Marks, 77, passed away peacefully at Atrium Health Stanly in Albemarle.
Funeral services will be 5:00 pm Monday, June 20, 2022, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home. Interment will be at a later date in Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Lilesville.
The family will greet friends Monday from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the funeral home and other times at the home of his sister in Wadesboro.
Wayne was born July 20, 1944, in Anson County, NC and was a son of the late John Reb Marks and the late Mary Dallie Usrey Marks. He was very proud to have been a son of the Gum Springs Community. He was a 1962 graduate of Anson High School and served a brief tour of duty with the United States Air Force and was discharged due to the death of his father.
He had a long and successful career with the CSX Railroad, retiring with 38 years of service as roadmaster of maintenance. He also worked with his son, Scottie at The Breakfast Nook in Albemarle.
Wayne was very active with Albemarle Parks and Recreation baseball. He served as a coach and the boys chosen to play for his teams were always excited because they knew Coach Marks would make sure they had transportation to and from practice and the games. It was nothing for him to load up his work truck with his players and his wife to help get the players back home. He also coached men’s softball and traveled extensively with the team.
He was well-known for his barbeque, and he often cooked it for family gatherings. After his retirement, he enjoyed walking through Albemarle, having achieved his goal of walking 10 miles in one day.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Diane Pegram Marks’ his children, Christie Souther (Doug) and Kyle Marks (Laura Beth) all of Albemarle; his daughter-in-law, Tammy Marks of Myrtle Beach, SC; his grandchildren, T.J. Melton, Branden Melton, Addison Marks, and Stella Marks; his great-grandsons, Justin Melton and Edward Melton; his sisters, Sue Henry of Wadesboro and Marie Roberson (Ed) of Memphis, TN; his sister-in-law, Linda Ratliff of Lilesville and his nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Scottie Marks and is sisters and brother, Louise Rivers, Mary Alice Gathings, Marguerite Bunn, Reid Marks, Ann Hough, and Jeanne Snuggs.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gum Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o, Sarah Harrington, 1364 Hailey’s Ferry Rd., Lilesville, NC 28091, or to the Alzheimer’s Association of the donor’s choice.
