NORWOOD - Mr. Daniel Claude Brooks, 76, died peacefully Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at his home with his wife and close friends around his bedside following a seven year struggle with Alzheimers.
Dan was born September 4, 1939 in Staten Island, NY a son of the late Claude Lee Brooks and Mary Lorraine David Brooks. He was a graduate of Oakboro High School and attended Wingate College. He later received both his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Education from Appalachian State University.
His career in education included Watauga County Public Schools, Anson Technical College (now South Piedmont Community College) and as Principal at Southview Academy in Wadesboro.
Following his retirement from education he owned and operated the family business, Brooks Welding, Inc. in Oakboro and was a member of First Baptist Church, Oakboro.
Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Burch Brooks of the home; his daughter, Lori Brooks Davenport and husband, Steve of Greensboro; his grandchildren, Andy Davenport of Charlotte and Bethany Davenport of Boone; his sister, Phyllis Brooks Griffin and husband, Larry of Oakboro and his faithful companion, Duncan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Shane Brooks.
There will be a service in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro for Dans family members with interment in Oakboro Cemetery. The Reverend Chip Alsobrooks will officiate with Mr. Wes Tucker, a childhood friend of Dan and Eleanors son, Shane giving a eulogy.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice of Stanly County and The Uwharrie for their compassion and care, especially nurse, Heather Crump, Alicia McKinnon and Beth Thomas during the last four months while in their care. A very special thanks to Sara Burr for her loving care for Dan and help to Eleanor in recent months.
