Wadesboro - Darlene Grace Streater, 62, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 22, 2016.
Funeral services will be 5 PM on Monday, April 25, 2016 at Leavitt Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lilesville Cemetery.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
It was Darlenes request for those attending the celebration of her life to dress casually in their favorite colors to celebrate life and love, and share their stories of friendship.
Darlene was born to Ila Williams Hill and Jasper Paul Streater on August 25, 1953 in Wadesboro, NC, the fourth of five children. She came home from Wadesboro Hospital to their home in Lilesville, NC.
She graduated from Bowman Senior High School in 1971, attended Gardner Webb College in 1971-1972 and graduated from Pembroke State University in 1976.
Her career in education began as a middle school classroom teacher and taught in the Anson County School System from 1976 to 1988. She was a teacher and counselor at the Youth Focus Psychiatric Center in Greensboro, NC from 1988 to 2005. She moved to Wilmington, NC in the fall of 2005 and taught middle school for the New Hanover County School System. She returned to Anson County in 2011 and taught middle school language arts until 2013. Her passion was language arts because her students could express themselves through creative writing.
The calling on Darlenes life was mentoring her students. She taught 3 generations of students and loved having the children of former students in her class. She loved animals, even feral cats that gathered at her back door, and especially her cat, Miss Maye. She loved going to the beach, being outside in the sunshine, and socializing with friends.
Surviving are her sisters, Dawn Streater Burtt (David) and Debby Streater Wheeler (Jack); her nieces and nephews, Jon Gates, Jessica Fogarty, Amanda Burtt, Emily McMahon, Helena Turner and Ben Streater, and their families.
Also surviving are her step-son, Gregory Moore (Shawna); her grandchildren, Clara and Zoe; and her sister of the heart, Gail Dove (Paul).
