THIS OBITUARY IS PROVIDED AS A COURTESY TO THE RUSHING FAMILY. Dennis James Rushing, age 73, of Wilmington, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2020, at his home, in the warm embrace of his family. He was born in Ypsilanti. MI on September 21, 1947, the son of William Henry Rushing and Ruth Graham Rushing. Dennis is survived by wife Janet Warner Rushing of 51 years, children Dennis James Rushing Junior and wife Shea Rushing, daughter Bonnie Rushing Bunders and husband Daniel Bunders and daughter Katie Elizabeth Tennant and husband Bob Tennant. Grandchildren; Dennis James Rushing III, Owen Tennant, Lillian Bunders, Paige Rushing, and Chloe Tennant. He is also survived by his brother, Calvin Rushing and wife Jane Rushing, sister in law, Jean Rushing and many nieces and nephews. Together with his parents he is predeceased by his brothers William Rushing and Gerald Rushing. Dennis worked as a supervisor, National Service Officer for the Disabled American Veterans, a Pre-Apprenticeship Rep for the NC Department of Labor, and most recently served as the President of Cape Fear Land Management. He also served as a volunteer at Good Shepherd Center in Wilmington, NC, New Hanover Regional Medical Center, and the New Hanover County Board of Elections. Dennis was a Recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from Governor Jim Holshouser. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is among the most prestigious awards presented by the Governor of North Carolina. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state, contributions to their communities, extra effort in their careers, and many years of service to their organizations. Dennis served his country with honor and distinction and bravery in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was awarded two Bronze Stars with V device and oak leaf cluster, and a Purple Heart. In his off time Dennis enjoyed cooking, fishing, camping, traveling, gardening, but most importantly spending time with his loving family. In lieu of flowers, donations made to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, or Good Shepherd Center of Wilmington, NC., in loving memory of Dennis, would be greatly appreciated.
