LILESVILLE – On Friday, December 27, 2024, Mr. Dewey Evans Sheppard, Sr., 92, loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away at his home.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 31, 2024, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with Mr. Ken Caulder officiating. Interment with Masonic Rites will follow in Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will greet friends from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM, Monday, December 30, 2024, at the funeral home and other times at the home.
Dewey was born December 9, 1932, in Anson County, NC and was one of three sons born to Seaborn George “S.G.” Sheppard and Flonnie Viola Taylor Sheppard. He was a graduate of Burnsville High School Class of 1951 with 21 in the graduating class.
He had a long and successful career with the railroad system, having started out with Seaboard Coastline Railroad in Hamlet and retiring with CSX Railroad after more than 30 years of service. He retired as a Conductor.
Dewey was a long-time member of Forestville United Methodist Church and was also a member of Kilwinning Masonic Lodge # 64 in Wadesboro for 59 years.
He enjoyed nothing more than to be outside around his home, whether gardening with flowers or vegetables or simply keeping the lawn in pristine condition. He was well-known for growing beautiful gladiolus in the summers. He also enjoyed tinkering on things around the house with tools and equipment.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Ruby Harrington Sheppard; his sons and daughter-in-law, Evans and Lynn Sheppard of Lilesville and Stacy Sheppard of Charlotte; his grandchildren, Morgan Eckersley of Peachland, Mallorie McGowan of Locust, Jesse Sheppard and Amber and Hunter Sheppard all of Lilesville; his great-grandchildren, Kaylie Eckersley, Drew Eckersley, Dawson Eckersley, Rylan McGowan, Conner McGowan, Caden McGowan, Sawyer Sheppard, Lainey Sheppard and Tate Sheppard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Broadaway and by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Elgie and Jean Sheppard and Bobby and Jan Sheppard.
