POLKTON – On Tuesday, April 13, 2021, Mrs. Doris Purser Godwin, 91, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, was welcomed into heaven by her Lord and Savior.
Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday, April 18, 2021 at New Home Baptist Church with Dr. Phil McRae officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will greet friends following the service in the church sanctuary.
Doris was born August 8, 1929 in Union County, NC and was a daughter of the late Rev. Henry Wilson Purser and the late Nancy Catherine Mullis Purser. She was a graduate of New Salem High School.
She worked for a number of years in the textile industry as a seamstress but was the Co-Owner of Godwin’s Body Shop with her husband.
Doris was the second oldest member of New Home Baptist Church, where she has been an active member for more than 40 years. She was a supporter of Blessings in a Bookbag, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Sheriff Landric Reid’s Stride with Pride shoe drive, New Home Baptist Church Youth Group and HOPE Pregnancy Center in Wadesboro.
She was an excellent cook and was well-known for baking cakes with her fresh coconut cakes being her most famous. She also enjoyed raising flowers, having a vegetable garden and mowing her own yard.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Johnnie Edwards (Lynn) of Peachland, Glenda Hammonds (Mark) and Doug Godwin (Melanie) both of Polkton; her grandchildren, Ritchie Edwards (Donna) of Monroe, Kirk Edwards (Kimberly) of Polkton, Caroline Harrington (Avery) of Morven, Mark Hammonds (Holly) of Marshville, Anna Gillespie (Rick) of Marvin and Zachary Wallace (Emma) of Pittsboro; her great-grandchildren, Racheal Bowers (Richie), Katherine Stuart (Ryan), Luke Edwards, Madelyn Edwards, Brady Edwards, Jon Edwards, Olivia Edwards, Brooke Edwards, Emily Edwards, A.J. Harrington, Reece Harrington, Lily Hammonds, Henly Hammonds, Adam Gillespie, Bella Gillespie, Camryn Gillespie, Mack Wallace and Miller Wallace; and her great-great-grandchildren, Rafe Stuart and Gentry Bowers.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Glenn Lee Godwin and John Lee Brooks and her sisters and brothers, Mae Griffin, Rommie Purser, Mary Lee Reynolds, Boyce Purser, Dalton Purser, Bessie Purser and Devon Purser.
Granny will be remembered for loving her family unconditionally and being the true Matriarch of their family.
