Dossie Henry (Jacob) Heavener, Jr.

PEACHLAND - On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Mr. Dossie Henry (Jacob) Heavener, Jr., was lovingly walked home surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at home in Peachland, NC at the age of 91.

Born December 6, 1932 in Wadesboro, NC, the youngest child of Doss (Jacob) and Berta (Morrison) Heavener.

He is survived by his daughter Angela Pike of Peachland, NC., with whom he made his home, daughters Sharon Hammann (Don) of Rockingham, NC, Pamela Payne (Brian Merry), Susan Travis (Stephen) both of Surfside, SC, and son Michael Heavener (Donna) of Winslow, ME.  Dossie was a grampa to 10 grandchildren, Tina and Cassie Heavener, Bill and Brian Payne, Tamara Ward, Joshua Parker, Jenilee Pike Bennett, Melinda Pike, Leslie Hammann and Jenny Taylor.  He was a great-grandfather to 15 and uncle to many neices and nephews. He also leaves very special loved ones, Luisa Hines-O'Riordan, Tina Pressley, and Sadilene Blake. He will be missed by his faithful K-9 companion Willow.

Siblings who preceded him in death include Sisters Mary Ella, Ruby, Libby, and brothers John, Clarence David, Leanord, and Henry.  He was also preceded in death by a great-grandaughter Laci Marie Treadaway and Peggy (Hill) Heavener, his former spouse.

A Wadesboro HS Class of 1950 student who was the President of the Glee Club, and an outstanding athlete of the football team. Dossie left HS before graduating to serve in the US Navy to bravely fight for our country in the Korean War from 1950-1955.  He served on the USS Ranier AE-5 as a Gunner, Yeoman, Medic and was licensed and certified as a Physician's Assistant. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

After leaving the military, he began a career in concrete construction for New England Carpenter's Union and The Ceco Corp. serving them for over 32 years building most of Boston and cities in surrounding states.  He became the Distric Superintendent for all of New England until retiring in 1990.

Dossie had a deep passion and love for music, specifically Gospel music and quartet style hymns.  In 1988, after a life-changing event which led him to be saved, he became a one-man-quartet and created hundreds of A Cappella Gospel CDs to give away, for free, to folks who wanted or needed to hear the Gospel in music. He volunteered to sing at nursing homes, churches and events for 7 years.

When asking family to describe him in a few words, the results were: Fun, adventurous, goofy and the best go-cart driver of all time.  A true gentle man, avid video gamer, traveler, jokester who loved a loaded Coney Island Hotdog all-the-way and who could cook the best shrimp ever!

When asked how he was doing, he would respond with "I stays super!" In parting, he would tell folks "God bless you, you have the best day ever!"

We have not lost him; we know exactly where he is.

The family will greet friends from 2:00 PM until 3:00 PM, Sunday, March 24, 2024,  at Leavitt Funeral Home, followed by a memorial service in the chapel with Mr. Ken Caulder officiating.

The inurnment will be later in Eastview Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made to Liberty Hospice Svs., 119 W.Wade St., Wadesboro, NC 28170
