Elvertus Flowers

The obituary for Elvertus Flowers is being published as a courtesy to her daughter, Jacquelyn Flowers and her grandchildren, Rodney and Christie Liles. II Timothy 4:7 On Friday, July 5, 2019, an angel of the Lord summoned Elvertus Flowers to peaceful sleep and joys that await when she meets the Great King in His Glory. Elvertus, daughter of the late Lester Flowers and Gussie Liles Flowers, was born on December 11, 1922 in Wadesboro, N.C. She was the seventh of 10 siblings of which all preceded her in death. (Clarence, Lucille, Marie, Arlie, Vernel, Joseph, Lee Esther, Haze, and Herman). She was educated in Anson County Public Schools. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined Gatewood Station A.M.E. Zion Church in Morven, North Carolina. Elvertus, having a beautiful voice and a love for singing joined the choir. Elvertus was a devoted and loving mother to her only child, Jacquelyn Flowers. Seeking better opportunities for employment, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Upon moving to Philadelphia, she immediately joined Mt. Pisgah AME Church. Elvertus held many jobs: seamstress & culinary chef to name a few before becoming a Child Care Worker with Youth Services, Inc that services delinquent youth where she worked until her retirement. In the late 70s she moved to the Mt Airy section of Philadelphia and moved her membership to New Bethel AME Church under the pastorate of Rev. Carl D. Ogden. She would later serve under Rev. Maurice Hughes. Elvertus served faithfully in several ministries; as a member of the Stewardess Board, appointment as a Missionary and as Acting President of the Sarah Tanner Missionary Society. Elvertus was also a member of the SOS Senior Ministry and the Pastors Aide Ministry, Elvertus joined her Sister in Law Mae Flowers to Holy Cross Lutheran Church School where she was employed as a Teacher Assistant. They both later moved to Excelsior Christian Academy,a private school. The academy served students from Kindergarten through middle school. After her retirement, she continued to care for children in her home, in which she received great enjoyment. In 2004, her niece Brenda Hopkins and husband Jerry, son Jerry Jr., prepared to move to Delaware with her ailing sister Lee Esther Howard. Desiring to be of help to her sister and the family she moved with them. "Auntie", as she was affectionately known, continued her role of caring for her family which she had begun in Philadelphia as after school provider for her niece and nephew Angela and Jerry Jr. She joined the M.O.T. Senior Center INC of Delaware. She was very active as she made many friends. She participated in the Sing Along Group, Arts and Crafts, ( where she made many prize-winning creations), Bible Study Classes and Wii Bowling Tournaments, in which she became very accomplished. Elvertus later joined her nieces church Metropolitan Baptist Church of Philadelphia under the pastorate of Elder Gregory Johnson. Over time, Elvertus failing health would limit her participation in all programming. She spent two months in the hospital with multiple complications and ultimately returning home on Hospice Care until the Lord summoned her to her final rest. She was blessed to have a wonderful support system from Bayada Home Health Care of Delaware for many years and she was well cared for by Home Health Aides Ms. Katrina Goslee and Ms. Rose Brown and her nurse Danielle. Elvertus was much beloved by family and friends. To her family, Elvertus was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend, She leaves to cherish her memories, her loving daughter, Jacquelyn Flowers Liles of Wadesboro, NC., a grandson, Rodney Liles of Lilesville, N.C., a granddaughter, Christie Liles of Wadesboro, N.C., four beautiful great-granddaughters: Katelyn Parson, Shantell Liles, Seara Liles, and Shelby Clark, two handsome great great-grandsons: Ken"yon Lindsey and Syncere Ledbetter, and one precious great great-granddaughter, Jaonni Taylor. Two cherished nieces Brenda Howard Hopkins (Jerry Sr.) of Townsend, Delaware, Starletta Flowers Williamson (the late Dr. James A. Williamson Jr.) of Middletown, Delaware, and nephew Joseph S. Flowers Jr. (Gwen) of Middletown, Delaware, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services were conducted Friday, July 12, 2019 at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 3500 Baring St., Philadelphia, PA, Elder Gregory Jojhnson, Pastor.
