Emma Ingram Horne Newkirk Wiesel was born a triplet in Rockingham, NC and one of 12 children.  At age 96 (January 24, 1927 – August 23, 2023), she left this world peacefully at Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center, Cary, NC.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Inez Horne, her 11 siblings, David W. Newkirk, Norman K. Wiesel, and Andrew Peeler (grandson). 

Emma is survived by children Emily Newkirk, Gene (Dawn) Newkirk, Al Newkirk, Angela Newkirk Krappl; Gerry Wiesel, Peggy Wiesel (Jim) Head, Sharon Wiesel (Tom) Griffin, Tina Wiesel (Ricky) Jackson, Cindi Wiesel (Stamey) Peeler; 11 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. 

She grew up in Polkton, NC.  Throughout her life, she lived in Charlotte, Lilesville, Wilmington, Marshville, Mebane, and Raleigh. 

Emma was a religious person, including being a member of St. John’s Baptist Church for over 50 years.  She never hesitated to ask the blessing for any occasion.  Plus, she would easily break into prayer. 

She had a strong work ethic.  She worked tirelessly to raise her children.  Throughout her life she worked as an administrative assistant and key punch operator, which was early computer instruction sets.  As well she taught key punch operation.  Her career included working for Burlington Industries, Norfolk Southern Railroad, and North Carolina Department of Labor.  She retired in 1999 from the North Carolina Department of Labor after 25 years.

Emma always strived for the best and challenged her kids to excel in all they did and always instilled the importance of having an education.

She was outgoing and a very friendly person.  She greeted people that she did not even know and easily started a conversation. 

She was married to Norman K. Wiesel for 54 years.  Unfortunately, he  passed away.in May 2023. 

Services will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, 1:30 PM. at the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home, 2036 Morven Road, Wadesboro, NC; followed by a graveside service at the Peachland Cemetery, Peachland, NC. 

The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Following the service at the cemetery, everyone is invited to the Homeplace, 2221 Hornetown Rd., Polkton for a reception.

A special thanks goes out to the Promedica Hospice care givers and pastoral staff. 

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Dementia Society of America.
