Flora Nelle McRae Johnson

McFarlan Mrs. Flora Nelle McRae Johnson, 102, died Sunday, January 13, 2019, at her home. Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Yvonne Hechler, Rev. Earl Bradshaw and Rev. Lonnie Grose officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church and other times at the home. Flora Nelle was born January 1, 1917, in Chesterfield County, SC, one of seven children born to the late Duncan Daniel McRae and Attie Craig McRae. She was a graduate of Zoar High School and was valedictorian of her class. Through the years, she was a farmer, employee for the United States Postal Service and a Vista Volunteer at the Frank Porter Graham Center. She was well-known for her vegetable and flower gardening, canning, and cooking. Her kitchen served as the focal point of weekly family gatherings. She was a long-time member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, serving many years as the church historian, due in part to her ability to recall people, places and events with remarkable clarity. She was a former member of Westfield Creek Baptist Church, which was the childhood church for Flora and her siblings. Surviving are her children, Gail Whittington, Perry (Sharon) Johnson and Jeffery (Shannon) Johnson all of McFarlan and Joe (Ronna) Johnson of Cheraw, SC and daughters-in-law, Phyllis Johnson of Cheraw, SC and Sue Hill of McFarlan, NC; her grandchildren, Betty Anne Turner, Thomas Johnson, Jr., Timothy Johnson, Tammy Johnson, Todd Whittington, David Johnson, Darlene Johnson Butler, Daniel Johnson, Kevin Johnson, Stephen Johnson and Kathryn McRae Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Sara Turner, Ryan Turner, Josh Johnson, Tameron Johnson, Piper Johnson, Will Whittington, Grace Whittington, Jordan Johnson, Madison Lynch, Luke Johnson, Karson Faith Brooks, Eli Johnson, Audra Butler, Eryn Butler, Andrew Johnson, Ethan Johnson, and William Johnson. She also had a great-great grandchild, Cade Turner. Flora Nelle also had many nieces and nephews who were truly part of her extended family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Calvin "TC" Johnson; sons, Tommy Johnson and Richard Johnson and her sisters and brother, Viola Maples, Annie V. Lewis, Sarah Davis, Fannie Rivers, Elizabeth Copeland and James McRae. The Johnson family graciously acknowledges the medical community for their care, and especially the daily caregivers, Priscilla Little, Denise Batts and Flora Maske for their compassionate care, love and laughter provided over the years. It will always be appreciated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund c/o Becky Nelson, P.O. Box 13, McFarlan, NC 28102.
