WADESBORO - Mrs. Frances Barker Vernon, 93, died Saturday, April 25, 2015 at White Oak Manor in Waxhaw.
Funeral services will be 11:00AM Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Carl Dumford and Rev. Stephen Ratliff. Interment will follow in Chatham Hills Memorial Park in Cheraw, SC.
The family will greet friends Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Frances was born August 4, 1921 in Yatesville, GA, the daughter of the late Thomas Alva and Kate Blassingame Barker. She attended both West Georgia Junior College and Georgia State College for Women and later graduated from Draughn School of Business in Atlanta.
She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Wadesboro where she had been a member of the choir for more than 35 years, the Presbyterian Women and served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher.
She worked with Moran D. McLendon, Attorney at Law and J.B. Watson, CPA and later joined her husband, in his business, Vernon Realty and attended the Realtors Institute in Chapel Hill. She especially enjoyed helping young couples find their first home. She was a charter member of Anson County Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Winslow Bridge Club.
Frances enjoyed playing bridge, working crossword puzzles, reading, musical concerts and traveling. Time spent with family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and close friends and neighbors were treasured.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Coleman Vernon, Jr., infant daughter, Susan, and her brothers, Thomas A. Barker, Jr. and James B. Barker.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia 'Pat' and Doug Thompson of Waxhaw; her grandchildren, Doug Thompson, Jr. and wife, Leigh of Charlotte and Melissa Frances 'Missy' Thompson Evans of Waxhaw; twin great-grandchildren, Trey and Delaney Thompson of Charlotte and her sisters-in-law, Louise H. Barker of Marietta, GA and Margie Vernon Wright of Elizabeth City and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
