Born in Anson County on February 12, 1934, George was one of seven children born to Barnice Williams and Ellison Ross Short. On the day he graduated from Morven High School, George left to serve his country in the United States Navy. Lucky for George that he was stationed at several seaports in the US and never served aboard a ship as he was prone to seasickness!
George was an accomplished handyman holding licenses in both the electrical and plumbing fields and enjoyed wearing many hats when it came to his work farming, the trucking business with Morven Freight Lines, a service station owner in Charlotte but he will perhaps best be remembered as the longtime Anson County Tax Assessor.
Survivors include two children, George E. (Melanie) Short of Morven and Debbie S. (Scott) Houston of Lexington, SC; four grandchildren, Erica Houston (Brian) Peake, Emily Houston (Jamie) Addison, Heather Short (Jeremy) Collins, and Matthew (Whitney) Short; and nine great-grandchildren, Logan Scott Peake, Dylan Carl Peake, Mary Katherine Addison, McKenzie Ann Addison, Braylon Michael Collins, Ellisyn Elizabeth Collins, Cameron George Collins, Kaison Matthew Short, and Elania Ryan Short.
Also surviving is one brother, Preston (Barbara) Short and two sisters, Margaret (Johnnie) James and Martha (Collier) Burns. In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Katherine "Kay" Gathings Short and three brothers, Vero, Ben and Harold Short.
The family suggests memorials to the Morven Cemetery Fund, c/o Cynthia Luck, 216 Jimilyn Road, Cheraw, SC 29520.
