Mr. Glenn Lee Godwin, 81, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, December 5, 2011 at Anson Community Hospital. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Thursday, December 8, 2011 at New Home Baptist Church with Dr. Tommy Ross and Dr. Robert Wensil officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro and other times at the home. Glenn was born August 26, 1930 in Union County, NC a son of the late Broadus Franklin and Eula Vivian Helms Godwin. He worked with Gaye Chevrolet in Marshville for 26 years, starting out as a mechanic and ultimately working in auto body repair. In 1991, he opened his own business, Godwin's Body Shop retiring later in 2001. He was a faithful member of New Home Baptist Church and was active and supportive of the ministries of the church and especially the brotherhood. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Doris Purser Godwin of the home; his children, Johnnie (Lynn) Edwards of Peachland, Glenda (Mark) Hammonds and Doug (Melanie) Godwin both of Polkton; his grandchildren, Ritchie (Donna) Edwards of Monroe, Kirk (Kimberly) Edwards, Anna Hammonds and Zachary Wallace all of Polkton, Mark (Holly) Hammonds of Wadesboro and Caroline (Avery) Harrington of Morven; his great-grandchildren, Racheal, Katherine, Luke, Madelyn, Brady, Jon, Brooke, Olivia, Emily, A.J., Reece and Lily; and his sister, Wanda Carpenter of Peachland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Linus Godwin. Glenn was a loving husband, father, Papa and Poppy. His greatest joys came when all of his family was gathered in the home with him and Doris. He could be experiencing a bad day and when his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren showed up, the day miraculously became much better. Spending time gardening and riding his tractor also brought him great pleasure. He certainly was a devoted family man. Memorials may be made to New Home Baptist Church, 1617 New Home Church Rd., Peachland, NC 28133. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.
