HOLDEN BEACH, NC – On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Mr. Harry Douglas “Sonny” Tanner 80, passed away peacefully at Novant Health Brunswick in Bolivia, NC.
Services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, February 17, 2025, by the graveside in Anson Memorial Park with Mr. Ken Caulder officiating.
The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
Sonny was born February 5, 1945, in Dublin, GA and was a son of the late James Thomas Tanner and the late Rena Belle Streetman Tanner Maness. He was a graduate of Anson High School and worked for nearly 40 years with Duff Norton, now Coffing Hoists in Wadesboro.
He enjoyed walking on the beach looking for shells, woodworking, making butcher blocks for his family and friends, fishing, panning for gold in Lanes Creek, looking for arrowheads, pulling practical jokes on his friends, but most of all he loved spending time with family.
Those who are left to cherish his memory are his wife of 32 years, Louise Dutton Tanner; his children, Doug Tanner (Mandy) of Wingate and Marlene Tanner of Monroe; his step-children, Melissa Carter of Charlotte and Shane Carter (Tannis) of Holden Beach; his grandchildren, James “JT” Tanner (Jessica) of Wingate and Cady Torrence (Dusty) of Marshville; his great-grandchildren, Noah Tanner, Rena Torrence, Allie Tanner, Jude Torrence, Reed Torrence and Emily Tanner and his nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Wade Maness and by his brothers, James Tanner, Mike Maness and Ted Maness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse Disaster Relief for Western North Carolina, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
