Lilesville - Mr. Henry Shannon Hill Jr., 87 years old, passed peacefully on June 29, 2012. Henry was born May 1, 1925 in Charleston, WV, Kanawha County. He grew up there with parents, Grace Davidson Hill and Henry Shannon Hill, Sr., and with his sister, Helen Hill.
Henry joined the Army of the United States at 18 years old. He served as Sergeant in the 326th Airborne Medical Company, in Northern France, until injured. He recuperated at rehabilitation facilities then located at Grove Park Inn, Asheville, NC.
After a long career in staff development and training, working in both West Virginia and South Carolina, Henry retired in North Carolina. He served on the town council in Lilesville Township, and as Sunday School Superintendent at Lilesville United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, backyard basketball games , and other outdoor activities. He like to pull for his favorite sports teams: University of West Virginia Mountaineers, Carolina Panthers, and Charlotte Bobcats.
Survivors include his wife, Ila Williams Hill; his children, Linda Shupe, Patricia Hill, Sandra Kerley, Thomas Hill and Samuel Hill; his step-children: Darlene Streater; Debby Wheeler and husband, Jack; Dawn Burtt and husband, David; grandchildren; great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Henry is preceded in death by his parents and sister; and by step-daughter, Danette Streater and step-son, Johnny Streater.
The family is grateful to staff at the NC Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville for the care, kindness, and friendship they gave to Henry and to our family.
Funeral services will be 11:00AM Saturday, July 7, 2012, in the Lilesville United Methodist Church with Rev. Norm Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Lilesville Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
