Herman Harry Mr. Huntley

WADESBORO - Mr. H. Harry Huntley, age 83, passed away peacefully at First Health Hospice and Palliative Care of Moore County on January 29, 2014. Mr. Huntley, a native of Anson County, lived in Wadesboro. Born October 1, 1930, to the late William Henry Huntley and the late Louise Beverly Huntley, Harry was their fifth child. His siblings are as follows: the late Colonel William Henry Huntley, Jr.; Robert W. Huntley; Louise Garris; and the late Charles Beverly Huntley. Upon graduation from Wadesboro High School, Harry attended UNC Chapel Hill. While at UNC he was in the ROTC Program and exited the university as an Air Force Lieutenant and served on bases in Cheyenne, Wyoming and El Paso, Texas. Upon return from the service in 1954, Mr. Huntley went to work for his father's business, which in 1903, began as Huntley-Martin Livery. In 1914, William Henry Huntley and Flake Martin established the Huntley Buick Company at the livery location and began selling Buick automobiles. Harry was well known in Wadesboro and the surrounding counties for his dedicated work following his father's lead in providing automobiles and service to many over the span of nearly three decades. Harry was known for having loyal customers and being an honest salesman with integrity. He married Bettie Baker Huntley on September 9, 1951, and from this marriage are his four children-William Everette Huntley, LuEllen Huntley, Sally Ann Huntley Braly, and Mary Constance (Connie Fry) Huntley. His children remember their father's unequivocal support for each receiving secondary and post secondary educations. His children knew without doubt a father who loved each and took delight in family gatherings and activities. Always a loyal UNC Tarheel fan, Harry enjoyed watching UNC football and basketball games, especially when his children joined in to cheer for the Heels. Mr. Huntley's work at Huntley Buick expanded to include Huntley Buick Pontiac Oldsmobile, and Chevrolet. He would exit the car business by 1980 as his son William Everette Huntley (Bill) would take over as President. This led to Harry pursuing his hobby of raising livestock, which eventually became a primary passion in his life as he created a Black Angus cow-calf operation with cattle bloodlines from western states Montana and Wyoming. Harry was a member of the Cattleman's Association and was recognized in the area and became a most reputable livestock breeder. In 1985, Harry assisted Stephen Spielberg by allowing his Anson County farm to be leased as the primary film location for the purpose of transforming Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize novel __The Color Purple__ into a notable film. Mr. Huntley oversaw all agricultural elements associated with this movie. Dedicated to First United Methodist Church of Wadesboro, Harry attended the men's Sunday School Class and enjoyed weekly services and raising his family in this beloved church on the corner of Morgan and South Greene Streets. Mr. Huntley is survived by his wife, Bettie; his children, Bill Huntley and wife, Joanne, LuEllen Huntley, Sally Braly and husband, Paul and Connie Fry and husband, David; one brother, Robert and wife, Evalyn; one sister, Louise; three grandsons, William Huntley and wife, Brinley, Joseph Huntley and wife Ashley, and Michael Braly; one granddaughter, Katharine Elks and husband, Dylan; one great-granddaughter, Charlotte Huntley; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
