Morven - James Haywood Diggs, 95 of Morven, NC, died Friday evening February 19, 2016 at Ambassador Health & Rehab in Wadesboro, NC after several years of declining health. Haywood is survived by his wife Louise Williams Diggs, sister-in-law Kathleen Williams Eller (Roland) of Lexington, NC, numerous nieces and nephews, and his precious dog Peekie.
Born May 25, 1920 in the Cairo Community of Anson County, NC, he was a son of the late Raymond Diggs and Una Ratliff Diggs. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Carlyle Diggs, and his sister, Sara Louise Morgan Lamb.
Haywood was a graduate of Morven High School and completed a 1-year Business Administration Course at Lilesville High School. He continued his education at Brevard College, Brevard, N.C. studying Agriculture.
In 1940 he began work with the Atlanta Army Service Forces as a U.S. Government Inspector, working on many assignments along the East Coast where he inspected various products manufactured under government contracts to support the Nations war efforts. One such assignment was to Hickory, N.C. where he met his wife, Louise Williams Diggs, whom he married in 1946.
At the deactivation of the War Assets Administration in 1948 Haywood returned to his beloved Cairo and began work for W.R. Bonsal Company in Lilesville. He remained in its employ for 37 years, being appointed as Assistant Secretary and Treasurer of the company. Upon his retirement he was thanked and commended for a job well done and a life well run. Haywoods life was well run, a man of sterling character who loved the Lord, loved his fellow man, and especially his family. He so appreciated all of lifes little extras, many and much of which he found in his own back yard sanctuary, the place he loved, and the place where he was happiest.
Haywood will be missed in his home communities of Morven, Cairo and Lilesville. He remained an active member of Morven Methodist Church, having served as its Sunday School Superintendent for seventeen years, sang in the Church Choir, chaired the Administrative Board and also served in other areas when called upon. He served on the Anson County Library Board and was Coordinator for Anson County Nursing Homes. Haywood was also the Treasurer for the Morven Cemetery.
Services will be held at 11amTuesday, February 23rd at the Morven Methodist Church followed by a reception in the church parish hall. A private burial will follow at the Morven Cemetery.
