Jane Townsend Edwards

Wadesboro - Jane Townsend Edwards passed away at her home January 14, 2021. Jane was born September 9, 1932 daughter of the late Sarah Pate Townsend and the late William Bartell Townsend. Jane was born in Red Springs, NC and grew up in Laurinburg, N.C. She graduated from Hollins College in 1954. Jane moved to her beloved Wadesboro in 1956. The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jane. She was a loyal member of her church, Calvary Episcopal and was involved in numerous civic organizations, especially the Anson County Arts Council and the Anson County Historical Society. Most of all, she cherished time spent with friends and family over home-cooked meals or on visits to Myrtle Beach. Known to friends as “Big Jane” and as “Big” to her grandchildren, Jane’s larger-than-life personality and quick wit outsized her diminutive stature. She is preceded in death by her husband, Bennett Edwards, her son-in-law, Steve Mitchener, her daughter-in-law, Paren Hardison and her step-daughter, Julie Saunders. She is survived by her three children; Jim Hardison (Kathy) of Winston Salem, Sally Mitchener of Charlotte, Bart Hardison of Atlanta; her six grandchildren, Millie and Jimbo Hardison, Jay (Lacey) and McNair Mitchener, and Pate and Caroline Hardison and her step-daughter, Betsy Hamer (Marvin). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Calvary Episcopal Church, 308 E Wade St, Wadesboro, NC 28170. The family will have a private memorial celebration of her life on Sunday, January 17, 2021. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home and online condolences may be made at www.leavittfh.com
