WADESBORO - Ms. Jessie Mae Christian, 87, died on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Anson Health and Rehabilitation Center in Wadesboro after years of declining health.
On March 6, 1927, Jessie was born into a large family of Christians. She became a born-again Christian some time later. She had one brother, Henry of Forsyth County and four sisters, they were, Bessie Ingram of Mecklenburg County, Pearline Parson, Alberta Strickland and Shirley Christian all of Anson County. Shirley is now the only surviving child of mother, Estella Christian. She now resides at Golden Living Rest Home in Mecklenburg County. Estella raised all six of her children in First Baptist Church, Ballard Street in Wadesboro, NC.
Jessie was very close to her mother. She lived with her long after her Anson County School age years in Wadesboro, even until Estella's death in 1978.
Jessie has been a member of First Baptist Church since birth. She took part in First Baptist's transition from Ballard Street to Sikes Avenue. Shew as a pledging member of the Gold Brick Building Fund Project and was among other faithful members who marched and sang from the past church to the present church, as a commitment to God that His house would continue to hold up the name of Jesus. Jessie's name is engraved on the plaque with other devoted members which hangs in the vestibule of the church today.
Many jobs she did have over the years, most of which involved food preparation and catering services. She was really a good cook, the kind that brings to mind 'down home' cooking that southern folk crave. Jessie attended Anson Community College and received certification. She did restaurant work at the Anson Diner in Wadesboro. Jessie became a lead cook in the cafeteria at Anson County Hospital after many years of continuous service. She worked part-time with Mrs. Bernice Murray in her catering business. They were successful work companions and dear friends until Mrs. Murray's death in 2010.
Jessie bore one loving and devoted son, Billy. He is married to A.R. Christian. They attend First Baptist Church where he is a deacon and she, a deaconess. Jessie has many grandchildren and great-grandchildren with the family names of Christian, Marshall and Warris.
We will all miss her no-nonsense spark, her easy smile, sense of humor and her giving hand.
We are still thankful this season. To God be the Glory!
