WADESBORO - Mrs. Josephine Sturdivant Smith, 90, died Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Funeral services will be 4:00PM Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Sikes Avenue with Rev. Gregory Everett, officiating. Interment will follow in Williams Cemetery, Polkton. Josephine was born April 2, 1922 in Polkton, NC and was a daughter of the late William A. and Fannie Little Sturdivant. She graduated from Polkton High School in 1943 and was employed for many years with Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Sanders at their boarding house. Later she married Raymond Smith and to this union was born one son, Billy Smith. She was a longtime member of New Grove Baptist Church in Polkton and at the time of her death, she was a member of First Baptist Church, Sikes Avenue, Wadesboro. In later years, she moved to Charlotte, NC and resided there for 10 years, working at Belk Cafeteria and joined St. Paul Baptist Church and attended faithfully and sang in the gospel choir. After residing in Charlotte, she decided to move to New York for employment. While residing in New York, she joined Antioch Baptist Church in Flushing Queens, NY and sang in the gospel choir. Following her retirement, she returned to Anson County, NC to be near her family. Surviving are her granddaughters, Vickey and Kristy Smith both of Chapel Hill, NC; her daughter-in-law, Sharon Dunn Smith and special niece and nephews, Ella and Henry Black and William Lowery; her brother-in-law, George Borden of Polkton, NC and her sister-in-law, Era Sturdivant of Charlotte, NC among many other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. In addition to her parents, her husband and her son, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Tyler E. Sturdivant, John Sturdivant, Doris Lowery, Lillian Carvin, and Fannie Borden.
