John Edward "Ed" Carpenter

Wadesboro – Mr. John Edward “Ed” Carpenter, 80, slipped away peacefully on Wednesday, June 30, 2021, while a patient at Hospice of Union County. A graveside celebration of life service will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, July 10th, at Brown Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Curtis Williams officiating. The family will greet friends prior to the service from 10:00AM until 11:30AM at Leavitt Funeral Home. There will be a break between the visitation and the graveside service to allow friends and family to transition from the funeral home to Brown Creek Church Cemetery. Born July 31, 1940, in Salem, New Jersey, Ed was a son of the late Joseph Paul and Mary Helen Winfield Carpenter. He worked several years at Southern Fabricators, Inc. in Polkton and later spent 16 years with the Anson County Water Treatment Plant where he retired. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served for three years. Survivors include his daughter, Sonya C. Owens (Tim) of Mooresville; a step-daughter, Taunya Stephens of Wadesboro; two brothers, Joe Carpenter (Paulette) of Summerville, SC, and Larry Carpenter (Dawn) of Polkton; a sister, Sue C. Kendall also of Polkton; a special 100 year old aunt, Sarah Icard; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Tice Carpenter. Ed had a passion for fast cars and motorcycles. He loved to work on cars and could talk endlessly about motors and car parts. He loved NASCAR on Sundays and all who knew him well knew not to come or call while the race was on. He enjoyed boating on Lake Tillery and was an animal lover, especially dachshund dogs as he had many of the years. Ed enjoyed trips to North Myrtle Beach with Martha most of all. The family suggests memorials be made to Brown Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, c/o Mary T. Moore, 151 Cameron Rd., Wadesboro, NC 28170 or to Hospice of Union County, 700 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110.
