Wadesboro - Mr. John Spencer 'Spence' Lowe, 87, died Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at Carolinas HealthCare System Anson. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Benny Clodfelter officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00PM at the funeral home. One of four children, Spence was born in Wadesboro on March 12, 1927, a son of the late Joseph Valentine and Belle Foye Carpenter Lowe. He attended Wadesboro High School and graduated from Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, NC and went on to serve in the US Army during WWII. A very athletic individual, Spence played football and baseball in high school. As a young pitcher for a Monroe American Legion team and the semi-pro Wade Flannels, Spence earned the nickname 'Fogball.' He would go on to coach Senior Little League baseball where he was well-respected for his ability to develop young players. Spence was also a talented boxer winning a set of 'Gold Gloves' before deciding to concentrate his talent on baseball. Following WWII, Spence returned to Wadesboro to work with his father in the family printing business. Upon his father's death, he assumed the role of owner/operator of Lowe's Printing Company until his retirement in 2003. Whether playing ball, hunting, fishing or gardening, Spence loved the outdoors. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church, Spence taught Sunday school for a number of years, and often served as both a greeter and usher for the worship services. Survivors include his son, John S. Lowe, Jr. (Karen) of Goldsboro; a daughter, Selene L. Hardison of Wadesboro; 5 grandchildren, William Hardison, Jr., Lauren Hardison, Marissa H. Thomas (Michael), John K. Lowe of Fairbanks, AK, and Cameron Lowe; and five great-grandchildren, Waylen, Noah, Christian, Summer and Karson. In addition to his parents, Spence was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Thomas Lowe; a son-in-law, Bill Hardison; and siblings, Jane L. Davis, Foye L. Ray and Joseph Valentine Lowe, Jr. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, Scholarship Fund, 118 E. Morgan St., Wadesboro, NC 28170.
