John Erie Pope, Jr.

John Erie Pope, Jr., 84, made his transition from this life to the next on Tuesday, July 27, 2021, from his daughter’s home in Bullock, NC. A service to celebrate Johnny’s life will be held at 3:00PM Saturday, July 31st, at Red Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Rodney Clements and Rev. Cameron Currin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends at Leavitt Funeral Home on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00PM. Born in Anson County on December 14, 1936, Johnny was a son of the late John Erie and Maude Caudle Pope. He graduated local public schools before enlisting in the National Guard. After completing his patriotic duty, Johnny managed to land a job with a local utility co-op, Pee Dee Electric which he turned into a 37 year career! In his spare time, Johnny really enjoyed being outdoors, especially gardening. Survivors include his daughter, Wanda Currin (Cameron) of Bullock, NC; his son, Darryl Pope Sr. of Garner, NC; a grandson, John D. Pope Jr. and his mother, Christine Horne; a great-grandson, John Christopher “JC” Pope; and a step-great-grandchild, Sophie Lounsberry. Also surviving are three sisters, Sarah Troutman of Peachland, Nancy Jones of Peachland, and Ruth Williams (Wayne) of South Carolina. In addition to his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Gaddy Pope; a grandson, Christopher David Pope; and two sisters, Eunice Connelly and Ellen Morton.
