Kate was born in Anson County on December 20, 1923, a daughter of the late Benjamin Risden Hill and Nezzie Smith Hill. She graduated from Wadesboro High School and went on to work as a seamstress for several garment manufacturers for over 42 years. But Kate was perhaps best known for her next 22 years spent as a Wal-Mart greeter. Every local Wal-Mart shopper knew Kate by name and she knew many of them by their names as well.
Survivors include a daughter, Katrenia M. Davis (David) of Peachland; a son, Risden Mabry (Cynthia) of Peachland; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Mabry of Peachland; four grandchildren, Kristina Forbes, Lenelle White (Joel), Candice Mabry (Travis), and Leah Mabry; and four great-grandchildren, David Forbes, Craig Forbes, Luke White and Bennett Robertson. Also surviving is her very special companion and dance partner, Frank Ratliff; and her extra close caregivers/friends Mary Stover, and Randy and Rhonda Carpenter.
Kate was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Mabry; and son, Rod Mabry.
Memorials may be made to the Olive Branch Family Care Home, PO Box 250, Marshville, NC 28103; or to Calvary Episcopal Church, Lawn Maintenance, 308 E. Wade St., Wadesboro, NC 28170.
