Marshville – Mr. Larry Edwin Harrington, 80, passed away at his home in Marshville, NC on January 16, 2021. Born in Richmond County on March 26, 1940, he was the son of the late Edwin Jackson Harrington and Gertrude Lovette Harrington, who took their infant son across the Pee Dee River and settled in the Gum Springs community in Lilesville, NC. Larry’s formative education began in the Gum Springs Baptist Church and Lilesville School. He attended Lenoir Rhyne College on a basketball scholarship, then to Wake Forest University Law School on a partial academic scholarship – making up the difference as a heavy equipment operator in the Lilesville gravel pits during the summers. Larry graduated cum laude from law school in 1964 and was employed as a special agent for the F.B.I., working in Washington DC, New York City, and New Haven, Connecticut, and later served in the Air National Guard. He resigned from the Bureau in 1966 and began practicing law in Union County, NC where he practiced law for 55 years. Larry was active in politics, served as a Union County Commissioner for 8 years and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1992. He was an avid bird hunter, fly fisherman, gardener and “gourmet” cook. Among his many interests, he was an amateur stone mason, geologist, historian and musician. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Kenny (Jean) Harrington. He is survived by his wife, Jane Coltrane Harrington, sons James J. Harrington (Joy), and William E. Harrington, daughter Mary Margaret “Meg” Melton, brother Richard Harrington (Gaye), grandchildren Bryce D. Melton, James Coltrane “Colt” Harrington, and Hazel Grace Harrington, and multiple cousins, nephews and nieces. Due to health concerns for the pandemic, a funeral service to celebrate the life of Larry Harrington will be a private event. The public are welcome to come by the funeral home on Thursday, January 21, 2021 from 9 AM to 3 PM to pay your respects. The family will not be present. Morgan & Son Funeral Home in Marshville, NC is serving the Harrington family.
