WADESBORO - A true southern lady and queen in the lives of many, Mrs. Lois Pope Scarborough, 98, received her crown of righteousness on Thursday, September 1, 2016.
There will be a service of worship celebrating her life at 3:00pm Saturday, September 3, 2016 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Harry Workman officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.
The family will greet friends Saturday from 1:30pm until 3:00pm in the ladies parlor of the church and other times at her home.
Lois was born July 26, 1918 in Wadesboro, NC, one of eleven children of the late Jessie B. Pope and the late Minnie Harrington Pope. She was a 1939 graduate of Charlotte Beauty School and owned and operated a beauty shop in her home for more than 60 years.
She was the second oldest member of First Baptist Church, Wadesboro and remained active and faithful until just two weeks ago. She was a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class, WMU and the Anticipators. She dearly loved her church family and was a true example of unconditional love.
Lois was a charter member of the Down to Earth Garden Club, an avid bridge player and loved to go fishing with her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening and preparing meals for her family. The Pope Family Thanksgiving at the home place in Ansonville was a real highlight of her life every year.
Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Al and Mickey Scarborough and Don and Elaine Scarborough of Polkton; her grandchildren and their spouses, Nolan Scarborough and Ashlee of Wadesboro, Kent Scarborough and Kathryn of Marshville, Whitney Scarborough Taylor and Jeremy of Peachland and Logan Scarborough and Ashley of Polkton; her great-grandchildren, Chloe, Casey and Landon Scarborough, Holden Scarborough Taylor and Baby Scarborough, due to arrive in March 2017; and her beloved brother, Reece Pope of Wadesboro. She had many dear nieces and nephews and their families.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Landon Alfred Scarborough and her brothers and sisters, Walter, Erie, Jessie, Clayton and Craven Pope, Mary Staton, Hyla Turner, Fannie Lou Cox and Ruth Hough.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Suzanne Carpenter, Barbara Ledbetter, Nikki Montgomery and Aurilla Burch who made it possible for Lois to remain in her home until this past Monday. Carolinas HealthCare System Anson and Hospice of Union County enabled her last days to be spent among family and friends with compassionate care and dignity.
