Louise Huntley Garris, age 93, died Saturday, February 20, 2016, at Quail Haven Village in Pinehurst, N.C. A graveside service will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016, at 11:30AM at Eastview Cemetery, Wadesboro, N.C., with the Reverend Karen Allen officiating. The family will greet friends at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro prior to the service beginning at 10:00AM.
Louise was born in Anson County on December 22, 1922, the daughter of the late Louise Penelope Beverly and William Henry Huntley. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, George Manley Thomas, and her husband of 10 years, Lt.Col. Herbert L. Garris; her brothers Charles Beverly Huntley, Col. William Henry Huntley, Jr., Herman Harry Huntley, and Robert Walter Huntley.
Louise was a graduate of Wadesboro High School and Brevard College. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution for 71 years and served as Regent for the Thomas-Wade Chapter of that organization for 2 terms. She was an active member of the North Carolina Poetry Society and a 35 year member of Friends of Weymouth.
Louise loved writing and painting and was most proud of her native North Carolina.
Surviving are her daughter, Louise Beverly Beane of Raleigh; her son, James Henry Thomas of Greensboro; her daughter Patricia Thomas Bissett (Bill) of Southern Pines; and her daughter Annie Thomas Stephenson (Victor) of Apex; her grandchildren, Sean Padric McLaurin (Laura) of Raleigh; John Franklin Thomas (Melody) of Greensboro; Sarah Lauren Thomas (Bert) of Lexington; Owen Huntley Garner of Charleston, S.C.; Joseph Chapman Garner of Raleigh; Thomas Hudson Stephenson of Apex; and William Andrew Stephenson of Pittsboro; her great grandchildren, Patrick McLaurin, Jackson Thomas, Wyatt Thomas, and Nova Stephenson. Also surviving are stepdaughters Pati Garris Fekete (Mike) of Brookeville, Md, and Polli Garris Goiser of Fairfax, Va; her sisters in law, Ruby Huntley and Nancy Huntley, both of Wadesboro, and Bettie Huntley of Southern Pines; and beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
