Lucy Davis, a long-time resident of Wadesboro, NC died in her sleep on Maundy Thursday, April 13, 2017. She was born in Quincy, Florida on April 2, 1932, daughter of The Reverend Edward McCrady Claytor and Helen Barton Claytor and the youngest of five children. She graduated from Louisburg College. A cradle Episcopalian, Lucy was devoted to and served the church her entire life. At Calvary Episcopal Church in Wadesboro, Lucy was a Vestry member, clerk to the Vestry and was the first woman to be elected Senior Warden. She was actively involved in Sunday School, the Altar Guild, the ECW and served as a representative to the Inter-Church Council. She was the first member of Calvary Episcopal to be elected to the Diocesan Council and was a member of the Board of Visitors of the Episcopal Conference Center as well as the Commission on Historic Properties. The Vestry of Calvary Episcopal Church honored Lucy in 2015 with Lucy Davis Day, naming her Senior Warden Emeritus.
Lucy was active in the Community, serving as a member of the Anson County School Board for 9 years, the board of the McLaurin Vocational Center, a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, President of the Anson County Hospital Auxiliary, a board member of the Anson County Historical Society, and Anson County Emergency Food and Shelter Board (FEMA). She played a vital role in establishing a Medical Museum in the Ashe-Covington Building and was a docent at the Bogan-Hammond House. Lucy was a devoted Girl Scout Leader and a member of the Arts Council. Lucy served on Anson Countys Committee for Improvement of Race Relations and was a dedicated supporter of Civil Rights.
Lucy had a smile and laugh that could light up a room. She shared her love for cats, dogs, birds and gardening with her children and grandchildren. She earned the designation of Master Gardener from the North Carolina State Extension.
Lucy is survived by her husband of 62 years, Daniel Whitaker Davis; her three children Virginia (Joe) of Richmond VA, Edward (Sandy) of Emory VA and Charles (Mary) of Conover NC; her 7 grandchildren William Bost (Lauren), Sarah Davis (Jeff), Helen Bost, Samuel Davis (Amanda), Dan Davis, Henry Davis and Sophie Davis; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her sisters Virginia Manning, Helen Tolhurst and her brothers Rivers Claytor and Samuel Claytor.
A celebration of Lucys life will be held at Calvary Episcopal Church in Wadesboro at 3:00PM on Easter Sunday, April 16. The family will greet friends following the service. Lucys ashes will be interred later at Valleytown Cemetery in Andrews, North Carolina.
