Lilesville - Mrs. Lula (Lou) Garris Hinson was the daughter of Charles Robert and Ella Jane Carter Garris of Lilesville.
Lou is survived by Aaron, her beloved husband and friend of 64 years; three children, Jane, Ronnie (Melody), and Scott (Laura); grandchildren Lianna (Chevis) Cuthrell, John Landen, Christopher, Michael, Hannah (Christopher Cunningham), and Peter Hinson; great-grandchildren, Carter, Avery, and Addie; nieces and nephews and their families. Lous sister, Martha Jane Garris Atkinson, preceded her in death.
Lou was a life-long member of Lilesville Baptist Church. She enjoyed serving on church committees, teaching mission studies, and the fellowship of her dearly loved JOY Sunday School class that she taught for 40 years.
Lou graduated from Lilesville High School in 1947, completed pre-nursing courses at Womens College (UNCG), and earned her Bachelors degree in Nursing Education at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU) in Richmond. After graduation she worked as a nursing educator at MCV for two years, as a nursing instructor at Watts Hospital (Durham), as an assistant director of nursing at Hamlet Hospital, and as a nurse in the private practice of local physicians. She was director of nursing at Anson County hospital and helped establish and was director of the LPN program at Anson Technical Institute. She taught health occupations at Bowman (Anson) High School for 15 years and was sponsor of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) club at the high school. In her words, I was always proud of my students who worked hard to learn and set goals to achieve. Many HOSA students won state, regional, and national awards. Lou served two terms on the Community Trustee Council of Anson Community Hospital. She was a charter member of Sigma Theta Tau, honor society of nursing; a member of Delta Kappa Gamma (Tau chapter) and earned an American Red Cross pin working with blood mobiles and state fair first aid centers.
Memorials may be made to the cemetery, building, or Elizabeth Lee memorial funds of the Lilesville Baptist Church, Liberty Hospice Services, Meadowview resident activities fund, or another charity of choice.
Lou and family appreciate the loving care of the Meadowview and hospice staff, the LBC family and friends and family, near and far.
