MORVEN - Margaret Annie Thomas Henry, a native of Morven who had been living at the Aldersgate retirement community in Charlotte since 2006, passed into Eternal Life, Saturday, February 7, 2015, at age 99.
She was the second youngest of the nine children of Charles and Annie Gulledge Thomas. All her siblings predeceased her. Her husband, William Rowe Henry, whom she married in 1943, died in 1981.
She is survived by a daughter, Annie Henry of Monroe; a son, William Rowe Henry, Jr. and daughter-in-law, Boonie Henry of Leesburg, VA; a grandson, Clark Adams Henry, also of Leesburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Henry also lived in Fairmont and Canton, where Mr. Henry was superintendent of schools, before returning to Morven in 1965.
She has been a member of Morven Baptist Church, Canton United Methodist Church, Morven United Methodist Church, and Monroe First Presbyterian Church. She received the honor of Lifetime Member of United Methodist Women. Her church activities included playing piano and organ. She started children's choirs in churches both in Canton and Morven, and until her recent illness played piano at Sunday School and at the 'Gathering' that begins worship at Monroe First Presbyterian. She also played piano as part of Aldersgate's group activities, using the piano that had been in her family since she was a small child.
In addition to her church activities, Mrs. Henry served as a volunteer in Gray Ladies, distributing mail and flowers to patients in Waynesville Hospital; and as a volunteer for Red Cross blood drives.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at Monroe First Presbyterian Church, 302 E Windsor St in Monroe. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM in the church fellowship hall. Interment will follow in Morven Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made either to Morven Cemetery Association, Box 373, Morven NC 28119 or to Monroe First Presbyterian Church, 302 E. Windsor St., Monroe NC 28112.
