Mrs. Martha Cameron Rivers, 66, passed away peacefully at her home in Polkton, NC.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00AM Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at Polkton United Methodist Church with Rev. JD Moffett and Rev. Gervaise Hitch officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. Current and former teachers are invited to sit together at the service.
Born August 9, 1954, in Anson County, Martha was a daughter of the late Joseph Crump and Frances Eller Cameron. She was a graduate of Bowman High School and received her degree in education from UNC-Pembroke. Martha was retired after 35 years as a beloved teacher of 1st grade, starting at Polkton Elementary School and later retiring from Peachland Polkton Elementary School. Following her retirement, she continued to volunteer at school staying in touch with the many friends she made over the years.
Martha was widely known for her baking skills – especially her delicious pound cakes, sourdough bread and cheese straws, all of which she enjoyed sharing with family, friends and neighbors. It was a tradition handed down by her mother and she proud to carry it on. She was a lifetime member of the Polkton United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her brother, James “Jim” Cameron (Cheryl) of Oakboro; and several nieces and nephews including Fran Cameron, Carrie Cameron Stroud, and Joanne Cameron; a sister-in-law, Teena Hatcher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Rivers; her brother, Joseph Crump Cameron, Jr.; and a niece, Amanda Caroline “Amy” Fisher.
