POLKTON - Mrs. Mary Dowdy Winfield, 91, died peacefully Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Hospice House of Union County, Monroe, NC. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Brown Creek BaptistChurch with Rev. Curtis Williams, Rev. Ronnie Sullivan and Rev. Darrell Nance officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm, Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Brown Creek Church and other times at the home the Bricker home. Mary was born October 24, 1922 in Campbell County, VA a daughter of the late William Davis and Georgia Farmer Dowdy. She was retired from Polkton Manufacturing and was a long-time member of Brown Creek Baptist Church, where she was faithful to the ministries of the church and had served as associate Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir. She and her husband, Boyce were both avid gardeners and farmers and enjoyed sharing vegetables from the bounty of their crops. She was well-known for her beautiful zinnias and sunflowers and famous for her scuppernong pie, cantaloupe pie, homemade pickles and potato salad. Surviving are her sister, Laura Dowdy Hutchinson of Hurt, VA; her god-children, David Griffin of Polkton, Allison Griffin of Winston-Salem and their mother, Linda Griffin of Polkton and many beloved nieces and nephews and their families in both the Dowdy and Winfield families. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Boyce Winfield, and her brother and sisters, Fred M. Dowdy, Edna Dowdy Vaughn and Ruth Dowdy. The family would like to express their sincerest appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the staffs at both Meadowview Terrace Assisted Living and Ambassador Health and Rehab for their exemplary care for Mary while she was a resident with them and most recently Hospice of Union County for their loving care for Mary in her last days. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brown Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, % James Turner, 4210 HWY 742 N, Wadesboro, NC 28170 or to McWhorter Hospice House, % Hospice of Union County, 700 W.
