Miriam Lana Brooks Burr

Miriam Lana Brooks Burr of Lilesville, NC, 72, died peacefully on Sunday, October 15, 2017 after a long courageous battle with gastro-intestinal cancer. A service to celebrate her life will be held on 2:00pm Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Walden officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 5:00pm until 7:00pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Miriam was born March 5, 1945 in Anson County, NC a daughter of the late Benjamin Timothy Brooks and Mary Poplin Brooks of Lilesville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Lamar Brooks, who was 27 years old when he died of cancer. She is survived by her three sons, Bryan (Shonna) Burr of New London, Darryl (Sherry) Burr of Lilesville and Justin (Kim) Burr of Wadesboro; her brother, Benjamin Timothy Brooks, Jr. of Oak Island; She was blessed with seven grandchildren, Cherish, Bryan Christian, Camron, Matthew, Krystal, Dalton and Kalista; seven great-grandchildren, Serenity, Charity, Brooklyn, Jaxon, Daylee, Karoline and Wyatt; and many nieces and nephews. A retired teacher who loved those teachable moments, Miriam was a graduate of Wingate College and received her M.A. in Elementary Education from UNC-Pembroke. She was a member of Gum Springs Baptist Church and a member of the local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution. Miriam was blessed with a wonderful smile which she used to make folks feel better. She loved gardening and crocheting, and her feline companion, Max. She fought her cancer with the same optimism, courage and determination she exhibited throughout her life. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Ambassador Health and Rehab for their loving care and faithful service to Miriam and her family.
