Wadesboro - On Monday, October 11, 2021, Mrs. Modestine Bennett Gatewood, 70, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest at Richmond County Hospice Haven in Rockingham with her family surrounding her bedside.
Modestine was born September 4, 1951, in Anson County and was a daughter of the late Plaid Walker Bennett and the late Katie Hinson Bennett. She was a 1969 graduate of Bowman High School, attended Anson Technical College, now, South Piedmont Community College and St. Andrew’s University in Laurinburg, NC.
She worked as a private duty care giver after receiving her Certified Nurse’s Assistant certification.
Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 26 years, Andrew J. Gatewood; her children and step-children, Jonathan Peguese, Kimderly Allen, Kelly Capel, Shawnta Davis (Chase), Chris Wilson (Se’Quoia), Antonio Johnson; her bonus daughters, Sharon Liles (David) and Tasha Dean (Calven); her grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Taurus Moore (Jasmine), Zamehonor Melton , Ariel Smith, My’Kajzyiha Bennett, Zavion Capel, Zacari Capel, Jahari McDowell, Antonio Johnson, Jr., Shamiya Wilson, Shamija Wilson, Zyon Wilson, Jaidah Wilson and Jaysean Dean; her sisters, Carolyn Colson and Antoinette Bennett and many other relatives and friends.
To so many, Modestine was known as “Ma”, “Ma Mot” or “Grandma” and other loving terms of endearment. Please know she loved each of you very much in return.
There will be a memorial service at 11:00 am, Saturday, October 16, 2021 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home.
Due to COVID 19, face masks are required for those in attendance at the service and please practice social distancing.
Friends may visit the family at the home of her daughter, Kim Allen 1791 McRae Road in Wadesboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Richmond County Hospice Haven, 1119 US-1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
