Dr. N. Jane Ingram, 65, of Roanoke, Virginia died on July 13, 2013. She was born to Lucile M. (Ingram) Streater and William L. Ingram, Jr. on July 22, 1947 in Lilesville, North Carolina.
Dr. Ingram joined the faculty of Roanoke College in 1978. In addition to being a professor of mathematics and computer science, she served as chair of the Mathematics, Computer Science & Physics Department from 2001-2009. She retired in 2012.
She served as President of the Blue Ridge Council of Teachers of Mathematics, received the Blue Key Professor Award in 1986 and the Dean's Award for Exemplary Service in 2010.
Dr. Ingram earned her Ph.D. in mathematics at the University of Maryland after having attained her bachelor's degree in mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her M.A. in mathematics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Expanding her educational experience she received a M.S. in computer science and applications at Virginia Tech. She was a member of the academic honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon.
Dr. Ingram loved her surviving pets Sally Ride and B.B. She believed in the life of the tree, the thrill of music, the expanse of the human mind, nature, fairness and mentoring those who yearn for more.
Jane is survived by her mother, Lucile M. Streater of Roanoke, VA; sister, Carol A. Ingram of Dingmans Ferry, PA; half sister, Debra June Brooks and husband Steve of Weston, Florida; half brother, Roy L. McCuen of Sarasota, Florida; three stepsisters, Dawn Streater Burtt and husband David of Raleigh, NC, Debby Streater Wheeler and husband Jack of Greensboro, NC and Darlene Grace Streater of Wadesboro, NC; and, her aunt Margaret Ingram Bailey of Fairfax, VA.
She was pre-deceased by her father William L. Ingram, Jr.; brother Charles N. Ingram; two stepfathers James R. Clark and Jasper Paul Streater; stepbrother Johnny Ingram Streater; and, stepsister Danette Maye Streater.
A graveside service is scheduled for Saturday, August 3 at noon at Savannah United Methodist Church Cemetery, located at 5549 Ingram Mountain Rd. in Lilesville, NC. A memorial service and reception is scheduled at Roanoke College on Wednesday, September 4 at 5pm. Memorial gifts may be made to Roanoke College, Salem VA or Bradley Free Clinic, Roanoke, VA.
