Nannie Sue Ledbetter Mrs. Neal

Mrs. Nannie Sue Ledbetter Neal, 103, died Thursday, January 03, 2013 peacefully at her home. Born October 15, 1909, Mrs. Neal was one of six children born to the late Walter Thomas and Dora Mae Martin Ledbetter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Ernest Neal. She was a homemaker and resided in Salem, VA most of her adult life before returning to North Carolina. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Monroe, NC. Mrs. Neal was also the oldest breast cancer survivor in NC having survived 59 years following her diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in 1954. Mrs. Neal enjoyed life to the fullest including being the Honorary Race Director for the 300 Miles of Courage NASCAR race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2011 and riding in a pace car driven by Kenny Wallace for her 102nd birthday. Survivors include her only daughter, Rev. Betty Neal Owens Boyd of the home; a granddaughter, Bettylyn Owens Krafft (Jeff) of Waxhaw; two step granddaughters, Katherine Boyd of Reston, VA and Stephanie Boyd Durner (John) of Wilmington; a great-grandchild, Jordan Krafft; two step great-grandchildren, John and Sydney Durner; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 4:00PM Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro with Rev. Phillip Gregory officiating. The family will greet friends before the service beginning at 3:00PM. Interment will be 1:00PM Monday in the Neal-Tuttle Family Cemetery in Walnut Cove, NC. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, PO Box 601597, Charlotte, NC 28260-1597.
