Ollie Mae Carter Chewning

WADESBORO - On Thursday, November 18, 2021, Mrs. Ollie Mae Carter Chewning, 86, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister went to be with her Lord and Savior while being cared for at Anson Health and Rehab in Wadesboro.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Sunday, November 21, 2021, in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home with her grandson, Rev. Steven Chewning and Rev. Mark Perko officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park.

Ollie Mae was born May 20, 1935, in Anson County, NC and was a daughter of the late Sam Jones Carter and the late Ollie Virginia Covington Carter. She was a graduate of Morven High School.

She grew up in McFarlan, and along with her family, she was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church. After being married to John Franklin Chewning of Wadesboro, she joined Camden Presbyterian Church and remained a faithful member until the church was closed just a few years ago. Ollie Mae then began attending Deep Creek Baptist Church with her son, and united with the church only after the pastor agreed to accept her Presbyterian baptism!

Ollie Mae worked for many years in textiles, retiring from Zimmer Manufacturing in Wadesboro and Takata, Inc. in Cheraw, SC. Following her retirement from textiles, she worked part-time as a receptionist at ACTS in Wadesboro.

She loved her family and time spent with them. Family time was very important to her. She was an excellent cook and found a lot of pleasure in feeding her family and friends. Nothing pleased her more than being involved in the lives of her grandsons.

Those left to cherish her memories are her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Ann Chewning of Wadesboro; her son-in-law, Ed Gatewood of Wadesboro; her grandsons, Shawn Harris, Brad Gatewood and Tyler Chewning and wife, Mirandi all of Wadesboro and Rev. Steven Chewning and wife, Meghan of Sanford; her 9 great-grandchildren and her sister and brother, Eleanor Pesce of Wadesboro and Terry Carter and wife, Julia of Anderson, SC and her nieces and nephews and their families.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Franklin Chewning; her daughter, Sybil Gatewood and her sisters and brother, Virginia Brooks, Tilton Carter, Hazel Caulder, Audrey Threadgill and S.J. Carter.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Deep Creek Christian Academy, 3425 Deep Creek Rd., Wadesboro, NC 28170.
