MORVEN - Mrs. Polly Griggs Garris, 92, died Monday, November 28, 2016 at Hospice of Union County in Monroe. Funeral services will be 11:00am Thursday, December 1, 2016 at New Hope United Methodist Church. Entombment will follow in Anson Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will greet friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at Leavitt Funeral Home, Wadesboro and other times at the home. Polly was born November 10, 1924 in Anson County, NC a daughter of the late Peter Lyndon Griggs and the late Tossie Hannah Williams Griggs. She was a 1942 graduate of Deep Creek High School and was Valedictorian of her class and attended Wingate College. She had worked for a number of years as a secretary at Burlington Industries in both Randleman and Wadesboro. She was a devoted member of New Hope United Methodist Church and served the church and its ministries faithfully until her declining health. Surviving are her daughter, Linda Vaughn and husband, Don of Morven; her grandchildren, Michele Hinson of Asheboro, Tammie Phillips and husband, Scott of Indian Trail, Jennifer Helms and husband, Mark of Matthews, Angie Garris of Shallotte and Bryan Garris and fiance', Stephanie of Marshville; her great-grandchildren, Chuck Hinson, Christian Hinson, Logan Phillips, Lexie Phillips, Owen Phillips, Ethan Helms, Aiden Helms, Scott Teal, Kyle Teal and Becky Teal; a great-great-grandson, Brantley Teal; and her sister, Myrlie Wallace and husband, Charles of Wadesboro. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles A. Garris in March 2016, her son, Charles Lyndon Chuck Garris, a great-grandson, Cody Phillips and sister, Valma Dillingham. Polly loved time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a true southern lady and was loved by her family and many dear friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, % Elizabeth Tucker, 1338 Mayesville Rd., Morven, NC 28119 or to Hospice of Union County, 900 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Monroe, NC 28110. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.
