Mrs. Rebecca 'Becky' Ruth Ratliff Hanna, 86, of Wadesboro, North Carolina, and Little River, South Carolina, passed away July 3, 2014, at Ambassador Health and Rehab in Wadesboro after an extended period of declining health. She was surrounded by her loving family, including her dedicated husband of 67 years, Walter W. Jake Hanna. A service to honor her life will be held at 3:00 pm Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:00 pm. Burial will follow at Anson Memorial Park. The Reverend Benjamin Clodfelter, minister of First United Methodist Church of Wadesboro will officiate. Mrs. Hanna was born in Wadesboro on May 24, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Ratliff and Lula Lockey Ratliff. The youngest of five children, she was preceded in death by sisters Mildred Melton and Monte Lee Reid and by brothers Cecil Ratcliff and James Ratliff. Mrs. Hanna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. With her keen business mind and love and knowledge of fashion, she successfully owned and operated Becky's Dress Shop for over 23 years. She especially enjoyed buying trips to New York City twice a year and selecting just the perfect outfits for her many customers. Even after her retirement in 1983, she still continued her love of fashion and shopping. She also enjoyed cooking, walking, gardening, traveling, and volunteering in the many organizations in which she was a member. She especially loved spending time at her home at the Beach. However, she was always happiest when surrounded by her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Until the time of her death, Mrs. Hanna was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Wadesboro where she served on various committees and as a member of the Executive Board for many years. She was a member of the Tex-Ledbetter Sunday School Class, and along with her husband, helped form the Energizer's Club, a senior citizen group, at the church. She also had been a member of the Downtown Merchants Association and the Anson County Chamber of Commerce. She was a charter member of the Down-to-Earth Garden Club where she held many offices and had served as President. She was also a former member of the Twin Valley Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Walter W. Jake Hanna, two daughters and their spouses, Diane Hanna Truman and Dr. George Truman of Wadesboro, Deborah Hanna McPhail and Fred McPhail, Jr. of Charlotte, and one son and his spouse, Walter W. Jake Hanna, Jr. and Dr. Eve Hanna of Tampa, Florida. She is also survived by five grandchildren: Constance Covington Smith and husband Charles of Palm Beach, Florida; Walter Boyce Covington and wife Lanna of Monroe; Dr. E. Fred McPhail III and wife Cecelia of Winston-Salem; David Wilson McPhail and wife Rebecca of Charlotte; and Wilson Lee Hanna of Tampa, Florida: and five great-grandchildren, Hanna Elks Smith and Charles Smith IV of Palm Beach, Florida, Grace and Miriam McPhail of Winston-Salem, and Bella Covington of Monroe. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and three step-grandchildren. Pallbearers for the service will be Walter Boyce Covington, Dr. E. Fred McPhail III, David Wilson McPhail, Wilson Lee Hanna, Charles W. Smith III, and Arthur C. Melton, Jr. The family deeply appreciates the compassionate care provided by Ambassador Health and Rehab, Dr. Victoria Rommel, and Dr. James Jones of Mecklenburg Medical Group.
