Mr. Richard Abt, 92, of Tucker, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 in his daughters home. He was born on January 17, 1924 in New York, New York to Michael Henry and Eleanor M. Abt. Richard served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 to 1946 and graduated from Hofstra College in 1950. He married Ruth A. Haesler of Queens, New York on November 9, 1952, and they were married for sixty-three years before her passing March 21, 2016. Following his military service, he worked for the New York Police Department and then became a credit manager for Sinclair Oil and BP. He was a long-standing member of Saint Mark Lutheran Church in Tucker, Georgia where he served as an elder, treasurer, and deacon. Richard loved fishing, gardening, and watching baseball. He enjoyed visits with family and friends from around the world and traveled to Alaska, the Philippines, and Europe. Richard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jr. and Beth Abt of Ketchikan, Alaska and their daughter, Fawn; daughter and son-in-law, Laura and John Ratliff, Jr. of New London, North Carolina and their children, Danielle and Christopher. He was preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Magee, wife Ruth Abt and grandson, Michael Abt, son of Richard Jr. and Beth Abt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Stanly & The Uwharrie, http://hospiceofstanly.org/donate-3/. Funeral arrangements are being made by Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro, North Carolina and a Military Funeral Honors Ceremony will be held at Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker, Georgia at a later date.
