Dr. Richard Kenneth Dick Constantian, of Charlotte and formerly of Wadesboro died April 26th at University Hospital in Charlotte at age 94.
Funeral services will be 3:00PM Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Wadesboro. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends at the church from 2:00 to 3:00PM. In addition, there will be a memorial service at Aldersgate Retirement Community at 2:00PM on Tuesday.
Dick was born October 2, 1922, in New Jersey to James and Anna Constantian. There he grew up with firm guidance from his parents, immigrants from Armenia, who taught him the value of a strong work ethic and perseverance through hardship. These teachings shaped who he became. He proudly served in the Army during World War II. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Tennessee and settled in Anson County, North Carolina, to set up practice. Soon after he would meet the love of his life, Elizabeth Lib Barker in Charlotte, and he knew she was the one he would love until the moment he died.
Dick lived in Wadesboro for over 50 years and served the community in many ways, not only providing eye care but also teaching classes at the High School and Sunday School classes at First United Methodist Church, serving as an active member and officer of the Rotary Club, and serving the community on the board of the county Health Department.
For the past seven years, Dick has lived at Aldersgate Retirement Community in Charlotte where he was a well-liked member of the community, active in the Liars Club and hosting dinners with speakers from the Secret Service, the FBI, NASA, news media, and other areas of public interest. These events, which he also arranged for the Rotary Club in Wadesboro, were a source of great pride and joy, especially when one of the speakers was his son, Chip, a Commander in the U. S. Navy.
Dick is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lib, and also by his Mother and Father and his brothers, Raymond and Harold. He is survived by his son, Richard Chip and his wife, Teri; his daughter, Sara and her husband, Alan; his grandchildren, Gracie, Hank, and Zach; his nephews, Alan and Mark; and his niece, Carol.
