OCEAN ISLE BEACH - Mr. Robert Fredrick Gray, Jr., 78, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2013, surrounded by his loving family, at his home following a long and arduous fight with prostate cancer. There will be a memorial service at 2:00pm Sunday, March 24, 2013 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home in Wadesboro. Interment will be in Eastview Cemetery. Fred was born July 17, 1934 in Wadesboro, NC a son of the late Robert Fredrick Gray and Leila Smith Gray. He was a 1952 graduate of Wadesboro High School and proudly served his country in the US Navy aboard the Destroyer USS Agerholm from 1952 until 1956. Following his tour of duty with the Navy, he attended NC State, majoring in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he started his career with Duke Power Company, where remained until his retirement in 1989 at age 55. In 1994, he and his family moved to their home in Ocean Isle, where he loved 'the beach life' boating, fishing and walking on the beach with his beloved Doberman Pincher, Harlee Girl. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Janice Atkinson Gray; his children, Robert Fredrick Gray, III and wife Laura and their children, Whitley and Kate; Susan Gray Lubbers and husband, Chuck and their children, Kelsey, Andrew and Taylor; Carl William Gray and wife, Lisa and their daughter, Morgan and expected son, arriving in April; Janice Gray Deichert and husband, Steve and their children, Kesler, Emily and Jonah; and his sister and brother, Allelia Gray Brown and McChesney Powell Gray. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Ocean Isle Beach Fire Department, 105 Causeway Dr., Ocean Isle Beach, NC 28469. The arrangements are in care of Leavitt Funeral Home.
