GREENSBORO - On Saturday, December 30, 2023, Mr. Robert McLendon, 62, formerly of Polkton, passed away at his home.
Robert Harvey McLendon was born on January 1, 1961, in Polkton, N.C., to the late Sherman and Sadie Bernice Lindsey McLendon. Robert attended Bowan High School and graduated in 1979. Shortly after high school, he joined and served in the United States Army from 1979 to 1982, where he gained valuable skills. Robert‘s extensive training in weaponry, combat vehicles, logistics, personnel management, and leadership resulted in a successful career as an infantryman. He also possessed various skills acquired through civilian life.
Robert was known for his honesty, loyalty, and adventurous spirit. One of Robert's greatest passions was traveling the world and immersing himself in different cultures. He found joy in exploring and experiencing various ways of life. His love for traveling began during his military service and continued until his declining health restricted his adventures in recent years. Robert's presence at family functions always brought excitement, and he will be deeply missed.
Robert is survived by his four sisters: Gloria Polk of Marshville, N.C., Sara Butler of Monroe, N.C., Mable McLendon of Joint Base Andrews, Md., and Lisa Sampson of Norfolk, Va.; and his six brothers: Sherman McLendon of Coates, Pa., Rubin (Frances) McLendon of Chesapeake, Va., David McLendon of Riverside, Ca., Ricky (Sandra) McLendon of Wadesboro, N.C., Frances Scott (Sonja) McLendon of Marshville, N.C., and Charles (Shirley) McLendon of Richmond, Va. He also leaves behind 19 nieces, 10 nephews, and a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews, along with his Aunt Elizabeth. Robert was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, parents, three brothers (Benjamin, Johnny, and Hubert), a brother in law (Jerry Polk), and one niece (Karen).
Robert confessed to Christ at an early age and was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Polkton. His faith played an important role in his life.
Funeral services will be 4:00 PM Saturday, January 13, 2024 in the Chapel of Leavitt Funeral Home.
Burial will be at 9:00 AM Friday, January 19, 2024 Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC with military honors.
