WADESBORO - On Saturday, October 28, 2023, Mr. Russell Scarborough, 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior while being cared for at Anson Health and Rehab in Wadesboro.
Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Cathedral Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Swaringen officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Eastview Cemetery.
The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Russell was born April 29, 1950, in Ft. Wayne, IN and was the only son of the late Alton Lee Scarborough and the late Willa Anne Fuqua Scarborough. He was a graduate of Carolina High School in Greenville and Greenville Technical College. He later graduated from the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree. While at USC, he played football, and he remained a proud alumni and dedicated Gamecocks Fan.
He worked for nearly 20 years with Sandhills Center for Mental Health, which is now, Daymark, as a substance abuse counselor before his retirement.
Russell was a veteran of the United States Army where he served as a Chaplain. He was also a member of the American Legion in Monroe, where he had served as Commander, and AMVETS in Rockingham.
He furthered his education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, receiving a Master of Arts degree, as well as a master’s in divinity.
He was a member of Cathedral Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and was actively involved in other areas of church ministry until his health declined.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Rebekah Carpenter (Rev. Jesse) of Polkton and Kayla Carpenter (Richard) of Wadesboro; his stepdaughter, JoAnna Hale (Serge) of Zebulon and his grandchildren, Keelee, Harmony, Harvey, Olivia, and Isaiah.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Cathedral Baptist Church, 1215 Old Lilesville Rd, Wadesboro, NC 28170.
