Shirley Trexler Harward

WADESBORO – Mrs. Shirley Trexler Harward, 79, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, September 10, 2020. Funeral services will be 10:00am Monday, September 14, 2020 at Leavitt Funeral Home with Rev. Heather McIntyre, and Mr. Ken Goins officiating. Interment will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will greet friends from 3:00pm until 5:00pm Sunday, September 13, 2020 at the funeral home and other times at the home. Shirley Ann Trexler was born February 2, 1941 in Anson County, NC and was the youngest of 11 children born to George Washington Trexler and Kate Howze Redfearn Trexler. She was a 1958 graduate of Deep Creek High School, which was the last graduating class and she was well known for playing high school basketball. She worked for 37 years at Anson Shirt Company as a seamstress. In her “spare time” she played soft ball and was responsible for the organizing the Yellow Jackets softball team in Wadesboro and the Women’s Softball League. The Yellow Jackets were undefeated in their league. All the while working a fulltime job, coaching, and playing softball, she and her husband always had a huge garden and she filled 2 freezers and 2 pantries with the bounty from their garden. Shirley was a life-long Presbyterian and member of First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the ministries of the church and served as a Sunday school teacher for many years in the youth department. She was an excellent cook and family and friends always looked forward to the dishes she brought to church dinners and family reunions. Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Pamela Harward Mihalyfi and Marty of Clayton and Henry Thomas “Tommy” Harward, Jr. and Peggy of Wadesboro. Other family members include her sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Melda Trexler and Mary Shepherd Trexler both of Wadesboro, Everette Harward of Ansonville and Deidra Harward of Charlotte and her many loving nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Thomas Harward in 2014 and her sisters and brothers, Katherine Flake, Virginia Burr, George Robert Trexler, Johnsie Baker, Hugh Redfearn Trexler, Walter Glenn Trexler, Joe Bennett Trexler, Betty Rose Martin, Jimmy Lee Trexler and Harold Eugene Trexler.
